1. Barking Dogs Never Bite

Bong Joon Ho’s brilliant first feature Barking Dogs Never Bite displays the audacious blending of genres and tones that would soon put him at the forefront of Korean cinema. Plays in 35mm tonight at 8:15pm & Friday at 4:30pm! ? Perturbed by the incessant yapping of a neighbor’s dog, a frazzled, out-of-work academic (Lee Sung-jae) resorts to drastic measures to quiet the canine—setting into motion a hilariously warped chain of events that turns a humble office worker (the brilliant Bae Doona, channeling Giulietta Masina) into a crusading, puppy-saving avenger. As always with Bong, black comedy, touches of horror, and incisive social commentary are balanced with the precision of a Swiss timepiece. #bongjoonho #barkingdogsneverbite #leesungjae #baedonna

4. Mother

I spoke about a selection of Japanese films in my last post, but now we're taking a little trip across the sea to South Korea with Bong Joon-Ho's "Mother"(2009). I saw this last weekend in a double-feature screening with "Parasite" and although "Parasite" is getting the big buzz (and rightfully so) the two films are equally fantastic and it was such a treat to watch them together. If you like this film then you will like "Parasite" and vice versa. Here we have a very...um...overtly and perversely co-dependent mother and son relationship between the unnamed titular character and her intellectually disabled son Do-joon. When Do-joon is arrested and accused of murdering young high-school girl Moon Ah-jung, his mother goes to excessive and extreme lengths to prove his innocence. With both films, Bong Joon-Ho is masterful in his ability to construct alliances with characters that are forever shifting and often the ones we're attached to and root for are...kind of shitty people doing unethical and selfish things. But this only makes for what I would describe as a very complexly ironic look at human behaviour. The shifts between those who are good and those who are bad in "Mother" definitely makes for some "oh shit" moments but at the same time this wave is such a thrilling pleasure to ride. In a rather Hitchcockian manner, we have red herrings as well as lines and images that become crucial at a later time all thrown into this simultaneously funny and unsettling murder mystery. It's totally riddled with black humor and some moments definitely made me laugh out loud. At the same time, however, this is a much darker and more unsettling film than "Parasite," and not only in the kind of erotic fetishistic mother and son relationship but also in terms of where the narrative ends up. It definitely left me with an odd, almost queasy feeling in my stomach alongside thoughtful contemplation and for that I can only applaud Bong Joon-Ho for his brilliant work. This is a great one, guys.Definitely one to put on your watchlist! #bongjoonho #southkoreancinema #southkoreanfilm #mother2009 #motherbongjoonho #filmreviews #cinema #cinephile #cinephilecomnunity #filmcommunity

5. Snowpiercer

6. Okja

In the lead up to Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite release, I’ve decided to watch some of his previous films in preparation for his Oscar frontrunner. Having never seen any of his films before I didn’t know what to expect with Okja. Thankfully, I adored it. The film is just bursting with energy, while managing to near seamlessly blend together Eastern and Western cultures throughout the film. How Bong balances a plethora of themes and social commentary through a truly heartfelt story filled with thrills and laughs is brilliant, and I can’t wait to watch more of his films over the next few weeks. And hats off to Seo-hyun Ahn, who gives one of the finest child performances in years, especially strong considering a vast majority of her more emotionally demanding scenes she had to act alongside a completely CGI creature. I would say Okja can form as a great gateway film into Korean cinema, or perhaps foreign language films in general. ~ #okja #bongjoonho #koreancinema #koreanfilm #film #cinema #movies
